Happiness Through the Lens of Nature’s Example
by Mollie Malone
This morning I am sitting on our deck in Prince Edward Island, overlooking field after green field, spilling down to the edge of the gently moving West River. An early morning robin is letting us know it is time to start our day. This is truly one of those mornings when it feels as if all is right with the world. There is a profound stillness, and yet, if I notice deeply, I can just about sense a pulsing vibration of life emanating from within the entire scene. For a brief moment I feel at one with the universe. I am at peace. I know what it is like to experience wellbeing.
This month I invite you to look at happiness through the lens of “wellbeing”; literally, that state of being when all is well. In particular, the invitation is to focus on wellbeing as it appears in nature. If one looks closely, and at the same time, broadly, one can see patterns that demonstrate that the natural drive of nature is toward balance, wellbeing, and the expression of full potential. The force that organizes all of nature is forever moving nature toward a big-picture perspective of these qualities. This doesn’t mean that abuse, destruction, natural disaster, death, or other seemingly bad things don’t happen. What it does mean is that ultimately, nature tries to correct itself toward wellbeing. Have a look around you. Start gathering the evidence. If, at first, something doesn’t seem to fit this premise, look for a bigger picture. A few of my favorite examples of this concept are these:
- A plant, starting from a seed will do everything possible to grow to it fullest expression of being. Even if it encounters a rock in its path, it will generally grow around it, reaching for the light, reaching to fulfill its potential. Even if someone forgets to water it, it will keep on trying to grow until it has exhausted all possibilities.
- An “out-of-control” fire rages through miles of beautiful forest. We, in our humanness might say “what a pity’, especially if we have been silly enough to build our houses in the middle of the forest. What we often overlook is that forest fires are nature’s gardener, pruning, thinning, and heating up the dormant seeds on the forest floor, so that they can germinate and the forest can be once again renewed.
- There are certain species of animals that will naturally stop reproducing when they become overpopulated. When the population reduces itself to a more optimal size, the animals will begin reproducing – nature at work.
I know that these are over-simplified examples, used to make my point. What I have found, however, is that if I keep expanding and challenging my beliefs about nature, the premise that the driving force behind nature is toward wellbeing and balance seems to hold true.
One of the many emerging facts of quantum physics, as well as the belief of most ancient spiritual traditions, is that humanity is empowered by and a part of the same force that governs and organizes all of nature. The words we use to describe this phenomenon will be different according to our perspective or belief. If it is true that we are all part of nature, then we too, are subject to the same principles as the rest of nature. We, too, should have the capacity to naturally allow balance, wellbeing and the expression of full potential into our lives.
Now then, the question becomes, “If the above is true, why aren’t we happier, or at least experiencing more of a sense of wellbeing?” The answer lies in our thinking. The single most influential factor that impedes out happiness is our thoughts. I invite you to consider this:
- When you are not feeling happy, or not feeling good, notice what you are thinking, or what belief (perhaps one that is so deep you don’t even consciously think of it) is driving your emotional state of being.
- When you are feeling happy or feeling good, notice what the thoughts or beliefs are that are attached to this experience.
- Now, imagine what would it be like if, for some reason, it was impossible to have any of those thoughts or believe any of those beliefs? What would be different about your life experience? What beliefs or thoughts pop up now? If you just allowed yourself to be at one with the laws of nature, what would be possible?
Happiness is a choice. What do you think about that?
I am in deep gratitude to Dr. Robert Solomon who inspired my husband and me to live more fully into nature’s model of wellbeing.
