A Sense of Purpose Paves the Way to Clarity

My client Dana‘s life had been full of creativity and successful entrepreneurial ventures. At the time we first spoke, however, her latest investment (real estate) was spiraling down into financial disaster. It was nothing she had anticipated. She had made the investment based on research, experience and, as always, a strong reliance on her intuition. She could not make sense of it, but at the same time one dream was dwindling, she also had a new dream whispering loudly in her ear. It did not seem like a good time to chase yet another venture, but she imagined creating low cost housing for young couples on the Hawaiian Islands where she lived. Over the past years, the rising cost of housing had made it almost impossible for young people to remain on their Hawaiian soil and close to their families... Affordable homes would offer them a solution.
Important insights started showing up as soon as Dana started working through the Now What? Program. She began to identify the blocks that were keeping her from trusting herself. She noticed that she was giving other people’s opinions and “good” advice more weight than her own inner knowing. She recognized the blocks that were feeding her fear of bankers and people of “power” and “control”.
Dana said, “the awareness of how my thinking and behavior were affecting my life was the most powerful part of the class for me and continues today, opening more and more opportunities that are aligned with my dream and with who I am.”
Like a lot of folks, Dana wanted to be absolutely sure before she started yet another new project. We looked for confirmation in her life history which is one of the assignments in chapter four of "Now What?". Through her life story, Dana could trace that she had always been fascinated with design, construction and homes. She also recognized that she was happiest when she was immersed in different cultures, as she was with the Hispanic community when she had run a business in California and with her involvement in Hawaiian studies in school. We looked at her deepest needs and values. Here, too, we found the need to be making a difference within a culture, to be recognized as a leader and to be engaged in creating, designing and inspiring. Still not quite sure, Dana felt the confirmation she needed would come from further exploration of her life purpose. After a very intuitively inspired individual coaching session Dana declared that her purpose was about “improving quality of life in a joyful and Buddha-like manner”.
At this point, Dana was very clear that her low-cost housing dream was an excellent match for who she was and what was important to her. She began making inquiries about what would actually be needed to make her project a success. As is so often the case once clients are very clear, interesting synchronicities began to happen. Influential individuals came forward in support of her dream. People started paying attention when she spoke, brainstorming with her and providing her with key contacts. A plan began to take shape.
When gently prodded to admit her deepest desire for this new project, she said that having generous government funding to make her homes available to all who were in need was key. As it turned out, someone in the Now What? class was connected to a woman in the Hawaiian Islands who had personal connections with some particularly influential resources. Within a week, Dana had a list of phone numbers of well-connected politicians and business people whom she could call about her project. She only wants to approach them once she has something solid to present, so in the meantime, she has ordered the first prefabricated home as a test for the market. She is full of enthusiasm and is continuing to make choices that are honoring of who she is, and of her purpose “to improve quality of life in a joyful, Buddha-like manner”. |
